Microsoft has announced that the much anticipated Windows Phone 7 series will have support for Xbox Live at the Mobile World Congress. But the question of how much functionality the Xbox Live users will have access to is up for grabs.

The official press release states that it will not have that much functionality, however. You will be able to access Xbox LIve through the Windows Phone 7 Games hub and you will be able to acquire achievements, build your Gamerscore, manage your friends list and browse the Xbox Live leaderboards. There will be certain turn-based games available, but not in real time. You will make your move, then the other player takes a turn and you will wait to recieve it and then act accordingly. Your Xbox Live avatar will also be viewable fromthe hub, even though that is do-able with any phone with a web-browser currently.

Microsoft’s Ron Pessner states that the Windows Phone 7 Series was built with the thought of entertainment in mind, and the design allows for some “Essential” features of Xbox LIVE to be brought to the Windows mobile platform. Microsoft aims to expand the Xbox LIVE service to many other platforms in order to allow people to connect and keep a tab on their games, entertainment and friends on the go. The Windows Phone 7 will apparently help them in achieving that goal.

As of now, they have done nothing ground breaking with this functionality, so it seems that they are still working on making an Xbox Live Mobile service that is more exciting.
