When Video Games Reach Movie Quality

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
The quality of video games is rapidly increasing, being compared by some to a blockbuster movie. How long will it take for the industry to truly reach the quality of the cinema industry, and what will we be able to expect, though?
To start off, there are people who doubt that video games will ever reach the quality of movies that you may see in theaters today. I can honestly say that it is not a matter of hope, it is fact that it will eventually happen. Video games are arguably as decent looking as some movies that were released 10 years ago. With the huge increase in technology that we are experiencing, such as the wonders of multi-core processing and dual SLI graphic cards, the only issue with allowing the video game industry to harness that power is that it would cost a lot of money for the user.
I am making a guess that by the next video game generation, we will be approaching or caught up to movie graphics of at least 2005. When graphics reach that point, it will require a lot of computational power, at which point a high price tag for some of the video game systems that you purchase such as a PS3 will be the norm. At that point, only the hardcore and wealthy will most likely stay in the market, and the ones who play for hobby will most likely not even attempt to purchase such a pricey console.
But besides that, you can expect that games will now require up to five years or more of development time. As of now,

God of War 3
they take anywhere between two and three years to produce a quality game of this generation, but when the graphical capabilities increase ( as well as the amount of storage a game is given ), the developers will have to work longer and harder in order to provide a fuller experience. So either the development teams will increase drastically in size or they will simply take their time with it. Imagine a game like God of War III, which is already one of the best looking games of this generation thus far. That game required more than 3 years of work and extensive beta testing in order to provide the grand experience that it did.
The sheer scope of gameplay and amount of features will be increased greatly. With the added space that will be able to be utilized, developers will now begin to push out games that can offer up to a full 24 hours straight of gameplay. Not only that, but massively multiplayer online games will most likely become an industry standard, as it allows for the most re-playability. So instead of simple single player games, there most likely will be a revolution in the industry that will make it one of the most exciting years for video gamers.
Also, you can be sure that all three gaming companies (Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo) will be making strives in motion controls and other innovative endeavors. The PlayStation Move as of now is quite the interesting controller, as it may finally allow for 1:1 movement recognition. Project Natal for the Xbox 360 allows for a hands-free interface that will be great for family mini-games and possibly integrated directly within the sequel to the Xbox 360. The Wii… well, Nintendo always brings something new and revolutionary to the table, so one can only dream of what the creative minds in the company are planning for their next release.
In short, the next generation of gaming is shaping up to be one of the most exciting ones yet. Enhances visuals and storage capacity, movie quality gameplay and graphics, perfected motion control and new innovations to be expected. The next generation will most likely result in video games reaching movie quality, and I am sure that many fans out there can not wait to behold such a thing.
