Video Games a Bad Influence

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
Video Game controversies enter the news a couple of months out of the year, which brings the anti-video gamers to make claims that video games is an extremely bad influence, even worse than porn some accuse.
I have not been paying attention to the problems of video game controversies for a long time, maybe a couple of years. But what I do know is that the grounds that many of these protesters are speaking on are pretty poor. One occasion I can remember is around the time that Grand Theft Auto San Andreas was released by Rockstar Games, and it so happens that a kid who was involved in a murder was claiming that GTA SA influenced him to. Now, lets think about this. He is clearly a teenager, not some naive child. If you could make a claim that might lessen your charges or at least bring in some sympathy from the video game protesters, I am sure that you would take it. Sure, some games may influence the player, but the thought that playing games makes us all at risk to become a murderer is pretty ridiculous.
Video games have had a positive influence on my life, actually. There are terms in video games that I would have never known otherwise, which helped improve my vocabulary. Not only that, but my reflexes and attention to details has been increased significantly. This has specifically been improved by playing shooting games. Although you are killing people in games, it can be used as a stress reliever. I actually read an article in which a Chinese Monk said that he played Call of Duty 4 to relieve anger at times.
The thought that video games are any more of a bad influence than any other form of entertainment or media. There are

movies that venture into areas that video game developers would never even dream of going to. Same with music, there are music that portrays subliminal messages. While in video games, you are controlling the character, the games are often linear and or with a good message. Either the game will offer freedom, which will most likely let people to live their desires of wreaking havoc in a city or being linear, which will give the gamer a set path and degrade the progression of the video game industry.
To be honest, video games will most likely become a larger industry than the movie industry. Why you may ask? As technology improves, the story line possibilities and graphical capabilities will become improved as well. This will eventually allow for an experience that allows for you to play something that is visually similar or equal to that shown in the movies, and be able to control the character that the story revolves around. So while video game controversies may be sparse now, as technology improves and allows for stories that can rival that of the movies, the media will begin to call it more of a bad influence and claim more controversial things more frequently.
