Unreal Engine Too Powerful For Nintendo 3DS

Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games, has said that the Nintendo 3DS will not be able to handle the Unreal Engine. He, admittedly, has not gotten a look under the hood of the 3DS though, so this may change.

Rein told Joystiq that it is below their minimum specifications, from what they assume. There is no way to verify that it cannot run the Unreal Engine, yet, but that is what they have been led to believe. He went on to say that a game like Epic Citadel could not be done on it.

Nintendo’s upcoming handheld is pushing out games with fairly amazing graphics, as seen by the line up. Being capable of running ports of Kingdom Hearts, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Resident Evil 4; I doubt it would even struggle to run the game in question.

The iPhone can successfully run the Unreal engine, so I am not sure about the validity he is saying. Either the iPhone is stronger than the Nintendo 3DS or his assumptions are extremely off. In any event, he went on to say that if the console was capable of supporting the engine, he would have been contacted. Many fans are accusing him of being bitter and rash in saying this and I almost agree. See Joystiq [Rein: 3DS likely below minimum specifications for Unreal Engine] for the original story
