Unreal Engine 4 Awaiting Massively Multi-Core Processors

Unreal Engine 4

At the DICE gaming event, Mark Rein of Epic Games came to promote the Unreal Engine technology and bring the Make Something Unreal modding contest to a close. However, when queried about the plans of Unreal Engine 4 release date, an unexpected answer was given.

Work is still being done on the Unreal Engine 4, but the release of that particular engine is still far off into the future. He states that the Unreal Engine 4 is designed with multi-core processors in mind. How many cores are required to be considered “multi-core processors” is still unknown, though I will speculate on my own to be quad or dual quad core. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 apparently still have far too few cores to fit the consideration, and possibly the next generation as well.

Rein believes that Unreal Engine 3 still has a lasting life-span as of now, just take a look at some of the Make Something Unreal contest entries that managed to push the envelop even with their limited resources. Advancements are still being made in UE3 technology as we speak, and probably far into the future. However, those of you hoping for talks about Gears of War 3 will be disappointed since it was not brought up.

However, this is in stark contradiction to what was said by Mike Caps, the Epic Games president, at Microsoft’s Gamefest 2008 in Seattle. It was said that the next console generation is predicted to fall between 2012 and 2018, and that the Unreal Engine 4 will already be waiting for its release. He claims that it will be in the next console generation, and it will exclusively target the next console generation. Support for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3’s successors are a given, and if Nintendo fixes their act and releases a proper powered machine, then them as well.

Most likely what happened is a change in ideals within the Epic Games company. Instead of releasing a new Unreal Engine so quickly, it is easier and maybe even smarter to simply update/upgrade their current Unreal Engine 3 technology and wait for the next big step to be had in the next generation console capabilities to release the Unreal Engine 4.
