Tokyo Game Show 2010 Holds More Variety, Less RPGs

Tokyo Game Show 2010

Tokyo Game Show 2010

Tokyo Game Show 2010 will promote 630 products, nearly 150 more products than that of what was at last years event. However, the increases in genres is what may surprise, or excite, gamers awaiting this titan of a show. There are half as many RPGs being shown this year while there is a small increase in shooters.

The “Others” and “Peripherals” category both see a phenomenal jump in productivity this time around. There are more than 5 times as many peripherals this time around and over twice as many products in the others category. This can mean many things. Maybe there will be genre defining games to be shown at the conference this time around, such as Katamari. Or maybe, Square Enix is preparing to sell a new line of video game perfume or drinks. The peripherals section has seen a justified increase, most likely due to the release of the PlayStation Move, Kinect and the upcoming Nintendo 3DS.

The Action, RPG and Adventure genres have all seen a drop in products. It seems that developers are looking to expand to different genres, newer possibilities, than in the previous year. With the release of all of these new peripherals and the upcoming 3DS, it may be a wise move to other genres that are port-friendly.

Here are the comparisons between last years and this upcoming TGS.

Genre/2009/2010
Action/115/102
RPG/52/26
Simulation/22/25
Puzzle/59/18
Adventure/13/12
Shooting/10/19
Sports/15/4
Racing/8/8
Peripherals/28/157
Others/103/226

I, for one, am hoping for some console-pushing announcements this year. Maybe there will finally be news of Kingdom Hearts 3 or possibly even a playable demo of Final Fantasy 13: Versus. Keep an eye out as news unfolds of the upcoming Tokyo Game Show event.
