The Appeal of the Left 4 Dead Series

Left 4 Dead 2
Left 4 Dead is the zombie horde killing series by Valve. It pits you as one of four characters, in your struggle to make it to safety as you travel from safe house to safe house trying to escape the zombie masses. But that is pretty much it, so what is so appealing about this series, to make it popular enough to cause a successful boycott for further support and warrant the release of sequels?
The single player mode of Left 4 Dead pretty much places you as one of the four characters and you travel throughout the maps in an attempt to find safety. You are loaded with a pistol as standard, and along the way you may find stronger weapons such as a sub machine gun, sniper rifle or even a shot gun. You are able to blow the body parts off of the zombies depending on the caliber of your weapon, which can be pretty enjoyable. Sniping off the leg of an enemy can be pretty enjoyable, or running around no-scoping them. But that is pretty much all you will come to see in terms of variety with weapons in the single player mode, so what is the appeal of it? Well, you will face hordes of enemies at once, which can give you a trapped feeling. Throwing a Molotov cocktail at a crowd of zombies and watching their flaming bodies can be pretty epic. Especially if you inflame a Hulking zombie or even a witch, they will not go down so quickly, so you will see a large flaming enemy relentlessly coming at you, which makes the experience more intense and over the top.
The multiplayer in the Left 4 Dead series is what many fans consider the bread and butter of the series. You are able to either be one of the zombies or the humans, and you are pitted up against each other. The zombies is pretty enjoyable to play since you will be able to play as some of the special spawns, even sometimes allowing you to be one of the hulking zombies. You also can be pretty much every zombie you may encounter in the single player, perhaps except the witch. It is more of a matter of taste, but not really anything special compared to some of the heavy hitters in the multiplayer gaming universe.
The release of Left 4 Dead 2 brings even more enjoyment and a bit more variety into the L4D series, bringing in a new cast of characters, weapons, features, and new additions to the special zombies. The main appeal towards the Left 4 Dead series is most likely the intense action it presents, holding the throne of the best zombie fighting game available.
