Sony Releasing New PlayStation Smart Phone in 2010

The Wall Street Journal reported that Sony will be releasing a new smart phone with the ability of downloading and playing PlayStation video games. This will be released later this year, which may be perceived as a competitor to the Apple iPad that can also play PlayStation 1 games.

The original PlayStation capable smart phone is being developed by Sony and Sony Ericsson, the manufacturer that takes the role of handling the mobile industry. There has been stories and rumors of a PlayStation smart phone for years now, and we have not seen action with each of these incarnations. However, Kotaku believes that due to the declining PSP sales, increasing competition from the iPhone and iPod gaming community, and the fairly well received completely digital PSPgo, the timing seems to make sense.

The Wall Street Journal goes on to claim that the other device planned by Sony to blur the distinction between a netbook, an e-reader and a PlayStation Portable will be slated for a 2010 launch.

Honestly, if these reports are true, then Sony may be getting an influx of fans for their portable market. A netbook/PSP amalgamation sounds like quite the powerful combo. It would be, possibly, the strongest mobile video gaming device to date, but the pricing may raise a few eyebrows. Keep an eye out for Sony’s planned PlayStation game playing Smart Phone in 2010.
