Sony Bringing PlayStation 3 Hackers to Court

The PlayStation 3 has recently had a major security breech at the hands of a hacking group, fail0verflow, and famed iPhone hacker George “GeoHot” Hotz; to which Sony said they would fix via network updates. These new hacks would allow for any owner of the PS3 to run unsigned code on their system, which leads to piracy and homebrew. However, instead of releasing said “network update” as promised, they are filing for a restraining order against the hackers.

GeoHot put the court documents up on his website when he received them. The court documents say that the hacks violate the DMCA, and that games are already being pirated and distributed through his method. Sony’s restraining order was created in order to prevent Hotz and others from further “breaking” the PS3′s protection measures, and from distributing their exploits.

If you listen closely, you can hear the screams of hackers all across the world at the notice of potentially not being able to jailbreak their PS3′s as hoped for. If Sony is successful in this case, two of the starting and best hackers will not even be able to distribute their findings. Not only that, but they would have to give up their “hacking devices” to Sony or the court. Me personally, I am rooting for GeoHot to be successful, because I would only get a PlayStation 3 if I could hack it to my hearts content.

GeoHots says he is not worried abotu Sony’s claim. He siad that he would expect such a prestigious company to be well versed in the law, Hotz told BBC. He then said that he spoken with legal counsel and he is comfortable that Sony’s actions hold no merit.
