Sony Announces PlayStation Plus
Sony made their press conference yesterday, at E3 2010, and announced the release of PlayStation Plus, coming next week.
PlayStation Plus is a premium service being made available to those whom are apart of the PlayStation Network. This subscription based add-on to the PlayStation Network aims to provide you with premium content in exchange for a small fee. Some of the content announced by Sony include: premium avatars, premium themes, free Qore subscription, early access to demos, full game trials and PlayStation Store discounts.
PlayStation Plus will cost the subscriber about $18 per 3 month periods and $50 annually. If that number is looking familiar to you, it is probably because it is the same price that Xbox Live costs its users. One of the big incentives to get a PlayStation 3 was for its free multiplayer and online service. While PlayStation Network is still offering its free multiplayer, it will no longer have as much of a grab. PlayStation Plus users will now have better perks to their membership, and with that, one of the long lived arguments for getting a PlayStation 3 is now invalid.
For PlayStation Plus members, Sony will pick four PlayStation Network games (one PSN game, two PlayStation Mini’s and one PS one classic) to release for free during the month. Then the next month, the choices will be switched up. Not only that, but for the PlayStation Store, the discounts will be varied on the monthly basis. So now, becoming a part of PlayStation Plus might even save you more money than you paid for it. Some potential users are already looking into ways of getting Free PlayStation Plus subscriptions.
It should be noted that once your subscription runs out, any games that you received for free will be made unplayable until your subscription is renewed. That is one aspect of this new PlayStation Network online service that is troubling the many potential fans. Another issue is that it does not have a strong enough incentive for membership. Sure, discounts are fine, but not everyone is an avid shopper of the PlayStation Store. Many people are just fine with playing PlayStation Network multiplayer for free, without having all of the fancy perks and extra’s. So Sony may have an issue with membership counts at first.
This is good news though, because now Sony will be able to give you special deals and early access to beta codes. So keep your eye out for the release of PlayStation Plus next week.
