Rockstar San Diego Allegedly has Poor Working Conditions

Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption

Rockstar Games is a company that many aspiring video game developers look up to as one of the best companies in the video game industry to work for. So these unsettling rumors of poor working conditions, by one by the name of “Rockstar Spouse”, claiming that the working conditions during the Red Dead Redemption development were poor is a bit nerve wracking.

One of the things mentioned in this letter by this anonymous blogger is that the Rockstar San Diego employees would have to work mandatory 12-hour days, six days a week, and would suffer pay cuts and limited vacations. This, easy to say, would seriously harm the quality of ones family or relationship due to the scarcity of their free time. This is the infamous “crunch time” that many fear in the video game industry, or for those who want to enter it. These changes usually come during the end months right before the contents release.

Apparently, if these conditions remain unchanged, the employees will be preparing to take legal action against the company. This account is similar to those of the one by a disgruntled EA employee, who went by the name EA Spouse. It is not known for sure whether or not the account of this blogger is true, but it would not be shocking if it actually is. Crunch time is a well known problem in the video game industry, and occurs even in the “best” companies.

This would be a good heads up for those of you who look to be working in the video game industry one day, whether it be as an artist or programmer, you will meet the realities of the crunch time eventually. One can hope, however, that it will be so severe, as the one that RockStar Games San Diego has been claimed to have.
