Reason Why PlayStation 3 Is Not Backwards Compatible

The Sony PlayStation 3 originally had support for backwards compatibility, allowing for the purchaser to acquire PlayStation 2 games and play it on their new console. However, since then, that feature (or luxury, rather) has been removed, much to the confusion of many video gamers.

For one, the PlayStation 2 is still selling quite a number of consoles still, which is, of course, making Sony a profit. Now, in an obvious point of view, placing backwards compatibility in the Ps3 combines two fairly different audiences, both the Ps2 and Ps3 fan bases. However, combining the two fan bases would effectively be cutting short their profits, because then the Ps2 would sell less and less, as more people make the switch to the newer generation console.

So now, the old “phat” PlayStation 3 has been scrapped and replaced with a newer, and slimmer, model that is completely stripped of that feature that we once enjoyed. So we do know, for a fact, that the feature could be brought back and implemented into the current model, but it just will not be done. So what do you think will happen with the many video game gems that were apart of the previous library of games? Well, here is a hint, think of what Sony is doing with the PSPgo.

PSPgo is clearly an endeavor into the market of digital distribution. It is a pretty bold move to push a console out that is solely dependent on it, so it is clear that Sony believes that their future lies in the hands of digital distribution. So what will this mean for your PlayStation 2 video games? Easy. An extensive library (most likely of the hit titles) will be placed on the PlayStation Network for you to purchase, even if you already own the game. So for those of you who have a game on the PS2 that you want to play on your Ps3, you will have to repurchase it, which is quite the inconvenience, when this could have been solved by the implementation directly into the hardware.

However, this does make it easier for those of you who want to find some of the rarer games out there, since you will be able to simply purchase it off of the internet, which can then be much of a convenience to you. So your old library now lies within the hands of digital distribution, which will suck for the extreme minority of those of you who have no access to the internet. I guess this was a smart move by Sony, not including backwards compatibility in the PlayStation 3, but lets hope that this system that they are thinking up can not be exploited.
