It is widely known that first person shooters have been said to improve ones hand-eye coordination and reflexes, but how much can video games improve a person’s study habits and social life. This is not an in-depth study of the effect of video games on one’s discipline, this is an anecdote.

The Bad Effects of Video Games on Life

Often, when one gets a new game they will be too distracted to want to do anything else. This is especially true when it comes to the hardcore gaming crowd that play almost as if it were sport. In freshman year high school, when I first got my Xbox 360 and Call of Duty 4 came out, my grades went down the drain because of the amount of hours I was putting in each day. Games definitely proved to have a greater grasp on my attention than education and academics did.

Another issue that people seem to bring up is the idea that excessively playing online games can harm one’s social life or social capabilities. There are many stories of gamers who break up with their boyfriend/girlfriend because they are not making enough time for them. There are even stories of a couple divorcing over issues caused by World of Warcraft. Then there is the notion that gamers who excessively play online, via Xbox Live, for example, begin to lack the ability to hold a conversation or make new friends in real life. You become a hermit of sorts.

While I was playing Call of Duty 4 for hours on end, my reflexes were at its greatest. This especially became handy when playing intense sports such as volleyball where you need to be able to track and bump the ball with accuracy if you want to succeed.  First person shooters are known to improve reflexes and a person’s attention to detail.

Playing over a multiplayer service such as Xbox Live or PlayStation Network introduces you to strangers constantly. Why people think that playing a game excessively online will harm social life is beyond me. You are actually forced to come in contact with and interact with more people than  one might normally expect in their day to day life. Believe it or not, companies design the service with the intent of creating friendships because that would sell the service even more.

Lastly, video games can be a great stress reliever. When I study, I tend to study for hours on end, sometimes mounting up to five hours straight. After five hours of studying, I have a lot of built up stress and energy that I need to release. One thing I make sure to do is push ups but then I make sure I finish off with video games. Having a competitive match online with friends is a great way to enjoy yourself with your friends from the comfort of your own home.

What is your opinion on the effect of video games on one’s social life or life in general? I believe that it has had more of a positive effect on my life than negative. While video games can become troublesome if you become addicted, when played in moderation it can greatly benefit you.

Yeah, but those interactions are not face-to-face and they are very limited. All you have to do is type “sup” or “noob!” every now and then, if that. Having voice chat helps a bit, but it’s still far from a meaningful conversation you’d have with someone in person.
