Playing Games On The iPad

Apple has just let out the iPad launch as of today, with people campingĀ  over night just to get a chance at playing with this intriguing device. But how versatile is it when it comes to gaming?

The iPad, at the least, will cost you about $499 for the 16gb model that apparently has Wi-Fi capabilities. For those of you who do not know anything about this dazzling device, it is basically an enlarged version of the popular iPod Touch. The screen is fairly large and has a high resolution which makes this platform ideal for carrying your movies with you, in HD quality, on the go. It still comes with the tilt functions which can and will be, of course, applied to the gaming abilities on this device. It has a 1ghz processor and can last up to 10 hours while surfing the internet continuously. A fairly impressive feat for those of you who would be leaving your iPad on while you are browsing forums or reading blogs. However, one downside to the iPad, although it is said to be fixed in the next official Apple update, is that it does not have multi-tasking capabilities. The ability to make use of multiple apps at once, maybe via a tabbing system.

With all of the technical details out of the way, lets bring this back to the video game scene. The iPad has an awkward control scheme for many of its video games, just as its predecessor did. The onscreen button layout, the best way for it to work for such a device, but an inconvenience none-the-less. The graphics are definitely better, and fairly impressive, compared to it’s iPod Touch counter parts, which may attract some at first glance. Many developers are jumping ship to this new platform with hopes of being able to use the device like never before. However, how does this justify a $500 price tag for such a device. This device, although it is well made, is definitely not better than a net book or even a low end laptop. The iPad can not view flash over the internet, can not multitask, and does not have the same power that a low end laptop, perhaps even $50 cheaper, would have.

I took the time out to go and take a visit to the official dell website. I configured a Dell Vostro 1015 Laptop, with a price tag of $449, I was able to get 2gb ram, 2.2GHz processor and a well made integrated Intel graphics card along with Windows 7 Home. Heck, you can even tag a webcam on along with that as well, for $50 cheaper than what it would cost you to get an iPad. So would playing games on the iPad be much of a good idea? Definitely not, when you can have World of Warcraft and many of the other online games available on the internet, on your well made and high quality laptop.

Now, most of you will say, you are not buying the iPad for playing games only. So what are you buying it for? The iPad does everything that the iPod Touch does, so to be honest, there is no real need to purchasing this item. You could get a new laptop with that money and be just as happy, instead of getting an iPad and letting it gather dust after a month or two.

All in all, I do not recommend you buy the iPad for playing games. I do not really recommend buying it at all. I have nothing against Apple, but the iPad seems to be nothing more than an enlarged iPod, which seems like a bit of a rip off to me, considering its price.
