OnLive has been officially released, and reviews and sample videos are beginning to pop up all across the internet. So what is the general opinion of the OnLive service?

Pricing of OnLive games:

In a recent interview, Steve Perlman stated that OnLive games will range from $5 to $60. However, when taking a look through the OnLive library, however small it is, you will see that the prices of games reflect the prices that you may pay for a retail copy. It was thought, at first, that the price of OnLive games would be less, because you do not need to pay for manufacturing costs, but this is proving not to be the case. Apparently, developers will be enjoying the benefits of not having manufacturing costs, and getting more royalties per purchase.

So many gamers now feel that the price of paying for both OnLive and retail games that you may want will become too much. However, for those of you who are only concerned with the quality of the service, the pricing may not phase you.

OnLive Video Game Library:

This is the reason that many gamers are giving OnLive so much flack. It apparently does not have a large enough, or entertaining enough, library of games to warrant becoming a part of the service. They lack many of the intense first person shooters that can be found on many of the video game consoles, such as Modern Warfare 2, Battlefield and more.  They do, however, appeal to those of you who are roleplaying-game fans. Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins can both be bought via OnLive. These games run smoothly and are considered as some of the best in their genre.

However, if you do stick with OnLive, it is guaranteed that more games will be sure to come to the service. As this service acquires greater success, developers and publishers will begin to see how profitable a partnership can be, and more games will be released. I’m personally rooting for the release of Red Dead Redemption or Grand Theft Auto 4. If you think about it, the capacity of multiplayer games can be increased ten fold because of the power available. That should be something to look into.

Lag on OnLive:

There have been little to no reports of lag while playing OnLive, surprisingly. This is one of OnLive’s make it or break it deals. Many gamers refuse to get OnLive because of the fear of lag. While playing an intense first person shooter, even the smallest bit of lag can cause you to be defeated or ruin the video game experience for you. To not experience any lag, you will need at least a connect of 5 mb and need to be within 1000 miles of the data center. For those of you who are, you can expect a smooth, high definition, gaming experience. It will be interesting to know how OnLive’s servers respond to the massive influx of players when the lid is officially lifted on the rolling out of players.

This is just a brief list of impressions, addressing some of the most dire topics. OnLive is currently an exceptional service that has met a rocky start up. Apparently, fans are unaware that OnLive is currently accepting members in batches of 100. So it can take anywhere from days to multiple weeks before you will be able to play. However, your membership is coming, and you will be able to have your own OnLive impressions soon.
