OnLive PlayPack Subscription Service Announced
OnLive, the cloud computing video game streaming service, will now offer a flat-rate video game plan starting next month.
The PlayPack, available now to those who own already own an OnLive Game System, will cost about $10 a month and launch for all OnLive members on January 15th.
The OnLive PlayPack will be added along with the 3 day and 5 day rentals as well as the Full PlayPass pay options. The new plan comes in the right moment, to supplement the release of the OnLive Game System.
The PlayPack option only gives access to a selection of games. Currently, this selection is made up of about 40 games, such as F.E.A.R 2, Unreal Tournament 3 and more.
Steve Perlman, founder and CEO of OnLive, calls this an additional perk to the on-demand service. He quite possibly answered the demands of many skeptics.
One of the major issues people had with OnLive was its subscription model. The thought of having to subscribe to a service and pay for games that one does not have physical ownership over was a major turnoff. So Perlman announces that the subscription fee has been removed and it is free.
The next major issue players had for this on-demand service was the payment model. You can buy a 3-day, 5-day or a full playpass. Gamers wanted a subscription model like Netflix, where you pay a flat rate and you have access to any game you want afterward. This was a pretty radical demand and I personally did not expect this development.
The OnLive PlayPack plan may actually sky rocket the video game service into popularity. It is like offering gamers an all you can eat buffet.
I personally look forward to seeing where this cloud computing video game service ends up in the future. In the mean time, look forward to the OnLive Game System.
