Nintendo 3DS performs better without 3D

Apparently, video games running on the Nintendo 3DS can be graphically improved and perform better if they do not make use of the 3D feature.

This is according to a report on IGN, in which developers claimed that they could theoretically use the extra processing power for additional texture passes and more complex geometry, or even increase the frame rate from 30 frames per second to 60.

This is an idea that slipped the minds of many fans of the Nintendo 3DS. But theoretically, it is true. It takes more processing power to render the images in 3D, since the Nintendo 3DS creates the same image twice, one for each eye, to give the impression of the image popping out. If you disable the 3D feature, or if the developer chooses not to implement it in their game, then the game would be able to make use of that extra processing power.

However, this is one of the system’s main selling points. Would it be worth it to disable a possibly game selling feature, for the extra processing and pixel pushing power? I believe so. The graphics of the game’s previewed at E3 2010, during the Nintendo conference, such as Kid Icarus Uprising, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and Metal Gear Solid are vastly superior to that of the original Nintendo DS already. If you could improve those graphics even further, then you have a handheld console that can seemingly surpass the graphics of the Nintendo Wii, which would be pleasing to both hardcore and general gamers.

Well that’s kind of stupid though isn’t it?… that’s the whole point of the device and having seen it myself at E3 it works very well on a portable device… with that being said… there’s no reason why developers couldn’t program a game to have 2 graphics options… one for 3D gameplay and another without… for example… under the options menu I could chose to have High gfx settings and no 3D support to have hi res textures more polygons and better Antialiasing… or have standard gfx with 3D support… and while we’re on the subject… they could probably even program it to Auto Recognize if 3D is on and default to the standard settings if it is… and High res settings when it’s not! …. that would be awesome!!!
