Guild Wars 2 To Have Mini-Games and Activities

ArenaNet is ready to make Guild Wars 2′s virtual world a bit more interesting by adding a multitude of activities, such as bar brawling or attending a shooting gallery.

The latest post on ArenaNet’s blog has game designer John Stumme explaining how Guild Wars 2 will one-up the competition and raise the standards for the fantasy MMO genre. How does he aim to do that? He speaks about how adding extra activities can make the virtual world of Guild Wars 2 much more exciting.

Stumme says how MMOs are supposed to be set in a virtual world. Surely, he has a point. The same recycled premise of hunting X amount of Y monsters is starting to get a bit boring. Many mmorpg’s lack a fundamental necessity, being mini-games or a way to cool off from all of the mindless grinding or the mundane task of completing quests. He then says that in the capitol cities of Guild Wars 2, you will have a myriad of ways to have fun in activities that are unique to each location. Mini-games have been incorporated into the game that cover a wide range of tastes and gaming styles.

As seen on Kotaku, the mention of mini-games can be quite a disappointment to some. Mini-games often have a negative connotation to some of the more hardcore video gamers. However, these mini-games are fleshed out and fit for the style and setting that GW2 offers. The blog mentions a couple of the styles of gameplay for these mini-games such as: team based gameplay, hectic free-for-all and a test of skill. These mini-games are restricted by level either, they work just as well for a new character as it would for an experienced one.

The experienced, described on the ArenaNet blog, to be had in a bar brawl sounds pretty interesting and fun. You are able to drink different types of ale, each which have a different effect on you, an example they made being that it can make you burp a toxic gas. The more ale you drink, the more intoxicated you become, and the higher chance you have for landing a critical hit, at the expense of your accuracy.

There is no teamwork to be had during a bar fight. There is also no outside weapons allowed. So you can punch and kick, bash your enemy over the head with your bottle, or toss kegs and tables at people. This all sounds like an extremely fun time, but one must hope that this lives up to its full capabilities and does not end up a shoddy implementation. The thought of adding mini-games and activities to an MMO is probably  not a new one, but it does have the capability of being extremely successful for Guild Wars, and if it fits the fighting system well enough, it may become even more popular than its predecessor.

Keep an eye out for Guild Wars 2, as it is nearing its release date in a couple of months. ArenaNet is still releasing information regarding this game, so be sure to keep up to date by reading their blog.
