Fight Night Round 4 Review

Fight Night Round 4

Fight Night Round 4

Fight Night Round 4 is the latest entry into the Fight Night series, and pretty much one of the best available boxing games out there.  It is a surprisingly realistic boxing simulator that lets you step into the shoes of many current boxers, as well as your own custom made ones, as you rise through the ranks and become a champion. Though the game has been out for quite some time, here is my Fight Night Round 4 review, to give my impressions and lasting thoughts on the game.

When starting to the game, you may find it a bit different in terms of gameplay and controls. When I initially started out, I did not even know how to throw punches and things were a bit awkward. But reading the manual does help, I suppose, but who reads the manual now a days, hah. Anyway, you will see that the punch controls are done by the right analog stick. Allow you to throw straights, jabs, hooks and uppercuts to both the head and body. The Rb button is also used as a haymaker modifier, so if you hold it, your swings become more deadly and powerful. This setup may be a bit cumbersome at first, but the more you use it, the more accustomed you will get to it. I find it hard to play the game with the button layout after using the total punch control (right analog stick) set up.

With that being said, the game is amazingly fun in what you can do with your attacks. For example, lets say that you are an out-fighter and you are fighting an in-fighter like Mike Tyson. If you sway backwards as he throws his uppercut and you dodge it, there will a counter window. Within this time frame, your attacks will be able to devastate your opponent. What I like to do is dodge a punch then counter with a haymaker, if you have a lot of power, it can do some serious damage. I have caught many flash knock outs using this technique, it works very well. It is also much more satisfying than a regular punch knock out.

The AI of the opponents are not to bad. They actually put up a pretty good fight, and I find myself struggling at times. Though I have never lost a math online or off, hah. You will find that after a down, some of the enemies seem to get their heads on straight, and will fight even fiercer than before. So just a little note, I recommend that you go in cautiously after downing an enemy, just to stay sure. Try to rush in after a downed Mike Tyson and you will see how many counters he manages to catch on you within the time frame of five seconds.

Fight Night Round 4 really defines the series, I think. Though the campaign mode can be a bit difficult, because of the learning curve of the training. I actually do not bother playing it, I just create a custom character and slap people up with him. The campaign is fun if you are good at doing combos so you can get the max benefit from them. Otherwise, you are pretty much out of luck. The online game play of this game is fairly good, I suppose. At times there is immense lag, however. When playing a game such as this, that is dependent on reflexes, it can be a bit annoying when your character moves one second after your controller input.

All in all, Fight Night Round 4 is my favorite 3d fighting game on the Xbox 360. It is really that good, and it keeps its entertainment for me. However, I am sure that many of you will not like how realistic it is, and if that does not phase you, you are probably just not into boxing. It is a real hate it or love it game, I suppose, as many other games are. So if you are looking for a new fighting game to get, I really recommend Fight Night Round 4. As you can see in this review, I really like this game, heh. I give Fight Night Round 4 five stars.
