Dragon Age 2 Borrowing From Mass Effect’s Path

Dragon Age 2 has been said to be taking inspiration from the direction of Mass Effect’s development progression.  Such as how it will now be honing conversation systems and save game continuity. However, these changes are taking it a long way from what it once was as Dragon Age: Origins, a much more classic and, as some argue, interesting approach.

Game Informer, debuting new information on the game, claims that Dragon Age 2 will be leaving behind the classic tree dialogue system, where you can simply choose lines of text, and is now using Mass Effect’s “wheel, which uses intent as a way to generate nearly real-time conversations. Now, instead of basing your answers on the position in the wheel, the hub will indicate what the tone of your response will be. This has already sparked some distaste within the Dragon Age fan-base, claiming that this limits freedom in the speech that is offered because of voice acting.

Game Informer also indicates that you will be able to carry over your save game from the first title, and your actions in Dragon Age Origins will determine how things will end up in the sequel. At the beginning of Dragon Age 2, you will start where the previous game ended.

One of the most interesting changes, however, is that the PC version will retain the original games “strategic combat” system. The console versions will feature a new combat system, which BioWare claims will make much better use of the control pad. Rather than trying to provide an identical experience to that of the PC, Dragon Age II will have a battle system that is created to play better for those on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

As of now, BioWare is not receiving much criticism with the direction it is taking Dragon Age 2. BioWare has been pushing out high quality role-playing games for quite some time now, and many people are just hoping that they are making the right decisions with this game so far. However, change may be an issue for fans who liked how things originally were.
