Dark Void Xbox Live Demo Impressions

Dark Void, by AirTight Games, has been released on the Xbox Live marketplace as a demo, but does it leave good impressions on the gamer?
Dark Void is a video game that seeks to push the envelope, to venture into unexplored areas of video game development in order to provide a completely unique experience. The main selling point for this video game was its flight mechanics which sought to amaze the gamer with intense shooting gameplay as well. The demo on Xbox Live puts you in the heat of the action, starting you off when you first acquire your jet pack and having you leap off a ledge and using it for the first time. This, at first, is a very interesting experience as can be said by the creator of the Free Xbox Live video game blog. You are essentially beginning a tutorial, where you are taught how to use the jet pack for the first time.
While flying your jet pack in Dark Void, you will be able to speed up or slow down which can be useful when you are about to fly into a wall and you want to slow down in order to make a tight turn. After learning the mechanics of flying, you will begin to destroy towers with guns located on your jet pack. The shooting system works on stationary targets well, it would be kind of hard to create that bad of a shooting system, but once the moving enemy targets enter the game, the mechanics begin to fall apart.
You are taught in-game how to do barrel rolls and change directions in mid flight, which can be useful when you are trying to make use of evasive tactics. But why I believe this game fails is because it does not give you the option of doing a dodge roll and keeping your eye on the target. If you were able to be both evasive and deadly, I would be more into this game because it would give me something more to work with. However, I found it annoying to try and actually shoot down the enemies that appeared on the screen because they flew so fast and the targeting system for Dark Void is pretty poorly made.
One remedy to that situation is to make use of the in-air grab, where you will then enter a cinematic scene of sorts where you will have to rapidly press a button in order to disable the ship and take control of it. But, personally, that should not have to be done in order to speed up a skirmish. Even when you get off of your jet pack and you begin running on foot and shooting enemies, the shooting mechanics and aiming system are a disappointment.
However, some great things about this game are that it has great graphics. I wish it could have had some water effects when you are accelerating with your jet pack near the surface of the water. Dark Void was a noble attempt at pushing the envelope and trying something new, however it was probably too big of a task for the team that created it, no offense. Maybe in time, a game with the same goals as Dark Void will come around again and be able to actually accomplish something. My impressions of the Dark Void Xbox Live demo are not so good, I perceive this game to be clunky and ill-prepared. I would not recommend you picking up this video game.
