Yoshinori Ono, Street Fighter IV producer, was interrupted during his Street Fighter IV and Beyond panel. Katsuhiro Harada, Tekken producer, joined together with the rival fighting game maker to announce two Street Fighter Versus Tekken games.

Street Fighter X Tekken was introduced with a teaser trailer that showed Dan being punched through a wall into a room where Ryu is meditating. Ryu then awakes only to see Tekken’s Kazuya Mishima coming to confront him in a comfortable Street Fighter IV inky-vibrant style. Street Fighter cross Tekken, as it is pronounced, will be coming to both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Not only that, but Ono brought with him a copy of the game, providing the attendees with a live, playable demo. Announcing such an unforseen collaboration is one thing, but providing the crowd with playable gameplay on the same day is truly exciting.

Street Fighter X Tekken will feature Street Fighter IV’s gameplay mechanics. The gameplay will be locked onto the 2D plane and both Tekken and Street Fighter characters will have their own EX-style super moves. However, there seems to be clear distinctions between the gameplay styles of both the Street Fighter and Tekken cast. Tekken seems to be sticking true to its roots with the combos that were performed by Kazuya Mishima. The demo started off with Ryu and Kazuya duking it out, but then Ono and Harada introduced two more characters, Street Fighter’s Chun-li and Tekken’s Nina Williams, as tag-ins. Ryu displayed his usual ultra hadouken move, while Kazuya showed his spinning electric uppercut.

It also appears that Kazuya has a useful step in move. I’m not sure if that will come with all of Tekken’s cast, but early on in the demo, Kazuya managed to dodge a hadouken by doing a low step-in towards Ryu and followed through with a combo. It appears that this game will be well balanced out, and it will surely be a hit for those of you whom like Street Fighters gameplay mechanic. However, for those of you whom are more partial towards Tekken, you will love the next announcement.

Harada went on to announce that Tekken X Street Fighter is also in development at Namco. This game is rumored to play in the style of Tekken, with a 3D environment instead of the 2D locked one featured in SFIV. So to be clear, Street Fighter X Tekken and Tekken X Street Fighter are two different games being developed by two different teams.
