Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies

Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies has been released on the iPhone recently and actually updated in the month of April. This game has a lot to offer for the first person shooter genre on Apple’s multimedia device, and is possibly one of the best games you can get at the moment.

World at War: Zombies is a graphically impressive game, considering the platform it is on. The graphics resemble that of a high end PlayStation One game, with fairly sharp textures and good animation. The environment you are placed in really depicts an area of no hope, with dark textures, little lighting, and barricades all over the place in order to prevent the zombies from coming in. The graphics work well with the control scheme to really innovate your gaming experience. The control scheme on the iPhone tends to be fairly klutzy, because of the on-screen analog stick and buttons. However, with Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies, you are able to use the tilt screen set up, where you turn and tilt your screen in order to aim your gun and then click with your thumb to fire your gun. Tapping your gun allows you to reload, and the knife symbol at the end allows you to melee.

The graphics and the control scheme really complements each other well. However, the story, or what I managed to ascertain from the tutorial mode, is pretty funny, in my opinion. At the start, you are with a comrade of some sort, who has been injured by zombies. He teaches you how to move, and allows you to configure your controls. After that, he tells you something along the lines of “To purchase a stronger weapon, talk to the chalk outline on the wall”. That type of video game writing is pretty humorous and pathetic to be honest. But then again, not everyone will be playing the game with the intention of enjoying good writing, rather to enjoy the gameplay. Also, the tutorial mode does do its goal well, of teaching you how to make your way through the game and gives you a feel for the controls.

I got through playing the first level, and it is pretty exciting. Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies does a great job at controlling the mood to put you, the player, on the edge. After you kill some of the waves of zombies, and you repair all of your barricades, you will start to hear the moans and breaking down of the material that you used to blockade them. It can really wear down on your mind and how calm you are.

There is also an online mode, whether via bluetooth or through a wifi connection. I have not even been able to experience this online mode, it has not worked for me, nor have I been able to find a match at all. But even so, Apple is coming out with the iPod Game Center, which is a universal online service that will have to be adapted to all future app’s, so it is not know what will even happen to this video game online service.

All in all, Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies is a very solid first person shooter for the Apple iPhone, and is definitely one of your best options for those of you looking to purchase an app.
