Sony PSPgo Released

PSPGo

PSPGo

The Sony PSPgo has been released as of October 1st, who has gone out to buy it? For those of you who have been following the news of this ill fated handheld console, then you may know that gamers and retail stores alike do not have high hopes for it. Why you may ask? Well, the answer is in the game support.

When I originally heard about the PSPgo, I only thought good things. It looked quite sleek and sexy, the design was enjoyable. It now has a flip screen, the format looks cleaned up, it is still glossy, and it comes in both black and white. There were no complaints as of yet, considering its better style, size and weight. But then it was announced how it does not have a UMD slot. Many of you may have wondered, initially, why Sony did not include any UMD support with the PSPgo. Well, simply because of piracy. There are people who buy the PSP for the sole purpose of hacking it and then downloading whatever games that they want for free.

It seems as if Sony has come up with their answer to piracy by not even allowing the use of UMDs, and I am sure that they will use this format for future consoles as well. In the age of digital distribution, there will be no way to legally hack your console, and it would not be easy even if you could. They pretty much have come up with the answer, much to the gamers dismay. But though the PSPgo has no UMD support, Sony said that they were going to make kiosks in which you can trade your preowned PSP games for a download ticket, so you would not have to buy it over again. But now, they said that it will not be happening due to licensing issues and such, so for those of you who wanted to use the PSPgo as your new main PSP, then you have lucked out. You will have to purchase your games all over again.

Little to say, when gamers heard of this news, there was an uproar. No one liked the sound of that, me included, and I am actually not buying one now that I have heard that. Some retail stores even commented that they will not bother even stocking up on PSPgo’s since they believe that it will sell so horribly. It looks as if Sony has to get their act together, because losing support from both gamers and retailers is definitely not a good thing. Especially considering that there are a numerous amount of gamers who are paranoid about purchasing digital content, because they may be lost and you would have no way of being able to reclaim them.

Well, I am actually curious as to how many of you are planning on or already have purchased a PSPgo. Then how many out of you already own a PSP and still bought one. We will see the sales figures of the PSPgo launch after about a week of its release, which is going to be soon. So we will see how well the fan reception of the PSPgo is.
